Kitchen lighting installation Milton ON

For kitchen lights, there are 3 main categories of lighting to consider:  ambient, task and accent.  Let’s look into each one:

Ambient lighting: This light is generally found in the ceiling as it provides an even base layer illumination for your room.  The popular trend is recessed lighting, commonly known as potlights, but alternatives include flushmount fixtures or possibly track or rail systems.  Spacing between potlights is important, but you’ll also need to check the suggested spacing with the ceiling height and the power of the unit being used.  Also, whatever is not covered by the task and accent lights should be covered by the ambient. There should be no dark pockets in the kitchen.

Task lighting:  There are two key areas in the kitchen that would benefit from task lights, the kitchen countertop and underneath cabinets.  Task lights above an island could be pendant lamps hung right above and spaced evenly apart. Undercabinet lighting is one of the most practical options that help with the kitchen’s functionality, as it helps to minimize the dreaded dark pockets of your working surface area.  These days, the options for undercabinet lighting are not limited to stick on LED strips. You can find more sophisticated systems that integrate the fixture and power seamlessly into the backsplash.

Accent lighting:  This type of light is like the jewelry of the room.  In the kitchen, accent lighting can serve as ambient lighting too.  Pendant lighting above the kitchen island countertop serves both purposes.  You just have to remember to give enough clearance between the light fixture and the work surface, usually between 30 to 36 inches.  Don’t forget to look into the kitchen layout.  The floor plan can help dictate the type and amount of lighting.  If the kitchen is enclosed, the light fixtures you choose should be enough to illuminate the room.  However, in more open concept homes where the kitchen flows into the adjacent dining room or living room, feel free to go for a larger statement ambient or decorative lighting piece.  This will create a nice focal point for the kitchen and define its space.
