Home office lighting installation Milton ON

More and more people are starting to work from home, but whether you’re in your home office to study, play or do work, the right amount and type of lighting can influence your overall comfort and reduce fatigue and eye strain.

Some things to consider when planning around your home office lighting:

Glare: Overhead lights can create an annoying direct glare.  Illuminate your office space with some ambient light such as lampshades which can soften the direct harsh effects seen in overhead lights.  Consider adding an upward-facing lamp which will bounce light off walls and ceilings rather than providing direct light. This will help to minimize unwanted casted shadows.

Task lighting: For computer and desk work, it’s a good idea to choose a dedicated light source, for example an adjustable desk lamp.  Depending on your desk setup, if you have multiple areas that require illumination, for example a computer area, a blueprint or layout area, you can set up a dedicated task light for each workstation.

Location: In the effort to reduce glare and casted shadows, think about the location of the light source.  For example, think about where your task lamp is in relation to your writing hand. If you’re right handed, perhaps put the desk lamp on the left side, unless you want to cast some uninspiring shadow puppets.  Where is your computer in relation to the window? If a light source is behind you, whether it’s natural or another harsh direct source, you’ll be facing a screen with annoying glare. Hello computer vision syndrome!

Accent and Decorative Lighting: Aside from task and ambient lighting, accent and decorative home lighting for home offer visual appeal to your environment.  The former is used to draw attention to objects such as wall paintings. The latter is used as a visual art piece in itself - think wall sconces.  There’s also decorative outdoor lighting that can add visual interest to your home’s exterior.

Light bulbs: LED lights have quickly become a mainstay in our homes.  The higher initial cost is offset by its long lifespan - around 20 years compared to their 1 to 2 year incandescent light bulb counterpart.  They also use up to 75% less energy. Halogen bulbs are mostly used in directional lighting such as potlights or track lights. Incandescent bulbs can still play a role in our homes as they’re still used in chandeliers, desk lamps and hallway lights to name a few.  They are inexpensive and can last up to 2 years depending on usage.  So when you're comparing bulbs, make sure you're not comparing apples to oranges.  The higher upfront cost of LED bulbs are offset leaps and bounds by its longevity.

If you’re unsure about the what and where of selecting lights for your home office, we’ll assess your environment to give you the best suggestions.  Our electricians will come equipped with all the knowledge you need to make the best decisions. So give us a call!
