Electrical repairs, replacements Milton ON![]() Your home has a whole lot of electrical wiring, networks and systems, so there are a lot of opportunities for something to go wrong. How do you know when you should tackle the project yourself and when to call a licensed electrician? Let’s take a look at some common electrical issues that might arise that warrant a call to your qualified electrical repairman.
1. Tripped Circuit Breaker How do you fix a tripped circuit breaker? First, let’s address the question “what does it mean when a breaker keeps tripping?” - if you’re utilizing an appliance and all of a sudden the circuit breaker trips, this happens when too much electricity flows through it and cannot handle the excess amount of current, and therefore is a mechanism to avoid overheating and causing a fire. When this occurs, turn off the appliance and the light switches in which the tripped breaker occured. Head towards the circuit breaker box and open the cover panel. Locate the tripped breaker and turn off, then back on. Finally, identify the malfunction before resetting the breaker. Now, if this keeps happening, it is worthwhile to contact your Milton electrician to investigate further. An additional circuit may need to be added, but if you’re dealing with an older home, you may need to replace the fuse box or panel altogether. 2. Flickering lights If you’re experiencing this issue and you ask yourself “how do I fix flickering lights?”,it would depend on the source of the flickering. This can be from electrical grid problems. If it’s due to inclement windy weather, and can create an electrical system short and minor power outages if dealing with frayed wiring. However, if this is an ongoing issue, there may be a faulty fixture or poor wiring connection, in which you’ll need to contact a professional electrician to address and fix the problem. |

Why would an electrical outlet feel warm? Why does my outlet smell like it’s burning? Why is my outlet hot with nothing plugged? There could be a variety of factors, ranging from simple to hazard. Here are some possible causes:
- You have too many plugs in one outlet, whether you’re using a power strip or outlet multiplier. Unplug a few items and relocate them, and see if the receptacle cools down after a couple of hours
- Damaged wiring inside the outlet or switch, or loose terminals can generate superfluous heat. This issue needs to be addressed right away by an electrician.
- If the visible parts of a switch or plug are broken, replace the entire thing immediately and while you’re doing so, use the opportunity to investigate the larger system for any faults.
- There may be an excessive amount of current flowing to a switch or outlet, creating too much demand on the circuit. The circuits may need to be rewired so all the plugs and switches in a given room aren’t on the same circuit. This is a project that should not be tackled yourself, but by your qualified electrician.
- Wrong fuse or breaker size: this is more common in older homes that haven’t had any recent code updates. As a result, older electrical systems cannot handle the increased load of modern appliances. If that’s the case, it’s probably time to upgrade the entire electrical wiring system.
