Appliance electrical installation Milton ONEvery single appliance in your home, whether it be a small one like a microwave or a large one like an electric range, has an electrical connection with a specific outlet and required breaker size needed. Aside from this commonality, there are some things we need to consider. We’ll focus on two common appliance installations in the average kitchen: the dishwasher electrical hookup and the electric range wiring.
Let’s start with electric stove wiring. They have special electrical requirements because they use a 120/240 volt circuit and receptacle. In both gas stoves and electric stoves, the 120 volt circuit provide power to vent fans, timers and other accessories. In the electric version, however, the 240 volt circuit is also needed to heat the stovetop heating elements and oven coils. This power requirement is actually similar to the electric clothes dryer as the 120 volt circuit provides current to the tumbler and timer, while the 240 volt circuit powers the heater. For safety and precise technical service, it’s best to call a qualified electrician to install a new 240 volt circuit breaker and route the electrical cable through walls to the area of the electric range outlet. The dishwasher installation is also quite involved, and not as simple as just plugging it in. The relatively easy part of the process is installing the water and drain lines, which will be short as the dishwasher is located near the kitchen sink. Regarding the power aspect of the installation, you must ensure there is a dedicated 20 amp circuit running from the electrical service panel. This involves drilling a hole through the floor into the basement or wherever the circuit break is located. Two more holes have to be drilled in the base of the sink cabinet for the drain hose and water line. |
As you can see, installing a dishwasher involves a lot of drilling of holes, and playing around with the electrical panel and wiring. This is not something a novice DIYer should attempt. The ramifications of faulty work is not like incorrectly assembling IKEA furniture. Wiring anything in your home requires specialized skills that our Milton electricians have years of experience with, and will do so safely and properly.
The final step after installing water and drain lines and setting up the electrical circuits is setting up the dishwasher. This last part can be done by the DIYer if required, but usually the contractors will install the dishwasher to completion. The standard width of the dishwasher is 24”, so before any of the work gets done, you have to ensure there is enough room in the opening to fit those dimensions. The dishwasher can then be slid into place with careful attention to not pull on the waterline, drain hose and electrical cable. Of course, there are a few more steps to completing the installation, but don’t hesitate to ask us about what’s involved.
