Dining room lighting installation Milton ON

Whether you eat with your family every night in the dining room, or reserve it for special occasions, the dining room is a place where memories are made.  So if you’re looking for dining room lighting ideas, you’ll want to make choices that lead to beauty and practicality.  When choosing a light fixture, for example, there are so many choices for the dropped light fixture above the dining room table.  These days, chandeliers come in so many shapes, sizes and styles. How do you even begin choosing?

Style: The style of chandelier should suit the style of the room and home, so a traditional room would fare well with a traditional chandelier while a contemporary room would do well with a sleek and minimalist one.  There are exceptions, however, as a contemporary dining room would also look well with a pretty chandelier. And not to mention there’s the transitional style which marries both traditional and modern. Browse online for style ideas to see what you like.  For example, you can search for something like “chandelier in contemporary dining room” for inspiration.

Shape: What about the general shape of the light fixture in relation to the shape of the table?  Generally speaking, you want to choose like with like. A round table does well with a round light like a chandelier, while a rectangular table pairs well with linear lighting fixtures.  Another option over a long table is to add two round chandeliers.  There are so many possibilities to play around with.  Feel free to experiment, but the above tips are tried and true, so you can't go wrong with that.

Size: How wide should a chandelier be over a dining room table?  Or if a rectangular table, what length of chandelier over dining table?  As a rule of thumb, the light should be one half to three quarters the width of the table.  And it can be from one third to two thirds the length of the table. So let’s use the example of a 48” wide by 60” long table.  Something like a 24” wide by 36” long linear fixture would look proportionate. How high do you hang a light fixture over a table?  The magic number is at least 30 inches.  This gives enough room to not have an obtrusive fixture in your line of sight, but is low enough to provide sufficient illumination for your meals.

You might also wonder: How many lumens do I need for a dining room?  If you like throwing parties and want to create a cozy and warm glow, opt for 2400-2700K if you’re shopping for an LED chandelier.  Consider also adding a dimmer switch to allow you to further set the mood, which is a popular choice in other rooms of your home like the bedroom, bathroom or home theatre.

One more note:  we talk a lot on this site about layering light, and the dining room is no exception.  Sometimes, the central light fixture over the table is not enough. You might want to add a couple of ceiling potlights to add sufficient ambient light.  The chandelier or table light serves as the decorative or even task lighting, as the “task” here is to eat, converse and enjoy each other’s company.  Give us a call for any of your dining room installation needs!
