Electrical safety is important for everyone, but with well over twenty thousand households in Milton, Ontario that have kids, it's especially important to keep the children safe.  Here are some tips for keeping your kids safe around electricity, brought to you by your local Milton electrician:

  1. Keep electrical devices out of reach: Children love to explore and touch things, so it's important to keep electrical devices out of their reach. This includes power cords, outlets, and electrical appliances.
  2. Teach your kids about electrical safety: Educate your kids about the dangers of electricity and teach them how to use electrical devices safely. Explain to them the importance of never sticking anything into an outlet and to never touch electrical appliances with wet hands.
  3. Cover unused outlets: Unused outlets can be dangerous, especially for young children who may try to stick things into them. Cover unused outlets with outlet covers or safety plugs to prevent accidents.
  4. Avoid using extension cords: Extension cords can be a tripping hazard and can also cause electrical fires if overloaded or damaged. Try to avoid using extension cords whenever possible and instead use power strips with built-in surge protection.
  5. Inspect electrical devices regularly: Regularly inspect electrical devices for signs of wear and tear, such as frayed cords or cracked outlets. Replace any damaged devices immediately to prevent accidents.
  6. Don't overload electrical outlets: Overloading electrical outlets can cause fires and other hazards. Teach your kids to only plug in one device per outlet and to never plug in too many devices at once.
  7. Install ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs): GFCIs can protect your family from electric shock by shutting off the power when it detects a ground fault. Install GFCIs in areas where water is present, such as bathrooms and kitchens.
